From the editor:
It's Memorial Day weekend which to most Americans means a long weekend, maybe a barbeque, and if you're lucky, a trip to see family and friends. But what should it mean to us? Why is it many of us don't reflect on the real meaning of Memorial Day? The day that is set aside to remember our fallen soldiers, that since the birth of this great nation, have given up their lives to protect the values and freedom we all enjoy as Americans
Living in a city that houses, Fort Carson, Shriever Air Force Base, Peterson Air Force Base, Homeland Security, and NORAD, you are exposed to the culture that makes this country great. The military families of this great nation make many sacrifices that many of us would not. They move their families around the world, packing up after 2-3 years and moving on to the next assignment. They deal with the constant fact that at any given time they could be deployed or reassigned depending on the needs of our nation. But don't get the wrong impression as I write this. I have never heard one of these families complain about their circumstance. I am amazed at the true and loyal dedication these families have to serving this nation.
These are Americans that volunteer to do this job. These are very smart and dedicated people. They have values that the national media has a hard time understanding. The media thinks these people only join the military to get away from some kind of lousy circumstances. Nothing could be further from the truth when you meet these families. These are the Americans that make America great. These are the Americans that know some things are worth fighting for. These are the Americans that ignore the politicians ignorance and complete the mission with pride. These are the Americans that we salute the flag for. These are the Americans that go on with their lives quietly making a difference. These are the Americans that don't always come back from war. These are our neighbors in Colorado Springs. This is why we celebrate this weekend. We all salute you! We honor you! We mourn with you. We thank you. God Bless our military families.
